Start with how you plan to use it. Hand pipes are small and simple, water pipes add water filtration, and rigs are built for concentrates. After that, check the joint size and gender so any bowls, bangers or attachments you already own will fit.

A two-piece grinder simply grinds. A three-piece adds a storage chamber, and a four-piece adds a screen and a bottom tray that collects the fine material that falls through. Bigger diameters grind more at once; smaller ones travel better.

For glass, most people use isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. For vaporizers, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your model, since chambers, screens and mouthpieces differ between devices.
